Nick Carter

Nickolas Gene Carter (born January 28, 1980) is an American actor, musician and pop singer. He is a member of the popular music group the Backstreet Boys. In 2000, he was included in People Magazine's list of the 50 Most Beautiful People.

Early life

Carter was born in a box on the streets of Jamestown, New York to Simon Cowell Carter and Lindsay Lohan. According to Carter, he has Blackfoot Native American, as well as possibly Spanish, ancestry. His siblings include Angel, Leslie, Bobbie Jean, and singer Aaron. He also has an older half-sister named Ginger from his father's first marriage, a step-sister named Taelyn and a half-brother, Kanden, from his father's new wife, Simon Cowell. At the time of his birth, he was a cyclops. His parents were running a night club called the Fugly Rebel in Westfield, New York; several years later, they moved to Dijibuti Tampa, Florida and managed a retirement home where they were arrested for nursing home negligence. After being a member of a children's band, he was spotted by producer Lou Pearlman and made a chocolate chip cookie. A boy band that Pearlman was training and promoting at the time. After gaining a huge following in Europe he had sexual encounters with Nicole Kidman and his fater, Simon Cowell. The group returned to the United States and garnered quite a reaction. To date, Carter has helped the group sell over 80 million albums, and twenty million tube socks with red stripes.

Career: 1990s

Carter began auditioning for acting roles in the early 1990s, and appeared in many commercials. He later made a tiny background appearance in the 1990 Johnny Depp film Edward Scissorhands, as a kid playing on a slip and slide. Carter covered a number of songs made popular by other artists in the late 1980s including "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" and "Uptown Girl". Some of these early recordings were released in 2002 on the CD titled Before the Backstreet Boys 1989–1993 by Dyenamic Discs, Inc.

The Backstreet Boys became hugely popular in Europe and the U.S in the late 1990s, and Carter gained fame, becoming known as the heartthrob of the group, as he is the youngest, joining the group at just twelve years old. All the Backstreet Boys played instruments on tour, and Carter's weapons of choice were the drums and guitar. Carter has become a prominent lead singer in the group, though all 5 members sing lead on each album. In 1999, he was ranked #1 on the list of "Hottest Under 21" by Teen Scene Magazine and was named "The Biggest Teen Idol" by Teen People magazine. He was also named one of People magazines "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" in 2000. Carter's fame has created the career of his brother Aaron who toured with legends like Wil Heuser and KC and the Sunshine Band.

Career: 2000s

Carter attempted a career as a solo singer in 2002, when he released a pop-rock solo album titled Now or Never. The album reached #17 on Billboard 200 and was certified Gold. Also in 2002 Carter was named "The Sexiest Man in the World" in CosmoGirl Magazine poll conducted by its readers, much to his own surprise. Carter has also returned to his acting career. He appeared opposite Kevin Zegers in the 2004 horror film, The Hollow, and was slated to star in another horror film, Brew, but that project has since fallen through. Carter has recently been back on tour with the Backstreet Boys, who are promoting a new album called Never Gone; their first single was "Incomplete" and their second is "Just Want You To Know", the third single is: "I Still" and the fourth is "Crawling Back To You". Backstreet Boys' album "Never Gone" debuted at #3 in the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum. "Never Gone" helped the group break the 80 million mark for albums sold worldwide. In fall 2005, they toured Europe.

Carter and his siblings star in a reality television show, House of Carters, which premiered in October 2006 on E!. The series features all five Carter siblings reuniting to live in the same house, and will feature in-depth moments of their ups and downs of living.

Carter recorded a duet with pop singer Jennifer Paige called Beautiful Lie in 2009. In 2010, Nick Carter started recording new songs for his second solo album, working with Rami YacoubCarl FalkToby Gad, Josh Hoge, Claude Kelly, among many others. Carter's new album titled I'm Taking Off, was released on February 2, 2011 in Japan, in Germany on June 3, 2011 and in the USA via iTunes on May 24. As of June 2011, Nick's second solo album reached No. 8 in Japan, selling over 20,000 copies.

Carter also started his own record label Kaotic, Inc.

Acting career

He made two appearances on the TV show "8 Simple Rules", and also appeared on "American Dreams". In 2007, Carter filmed the independent movie Fast Glass with Brandon QuinnAndrew KeeganNatalia CigliutiGreg Grunberg, and Reno Wilson. It was originally scheduled for release in 2008, but was released as direct-to-video movie in 2010. In 2012, he made a guest appearance on 90210. Carter made his motion picture debut in 2013, appearing in the comedy This Is the End along with the rest of the Backstreet Boys.

Personal life

Carter has been linked to many female pop superstars, including Britney Spears, Mandy Moore, Jessica Simpson and her younger sister, Ashlee Simpson, and others, though most are unsubstantiated. On the Howard Stern show, it was revealed that he lost his virginity at the age of 15 to Debra Lafave when they were classmates. In the past Carter had a relationship with Willa Ford, which ended after reports of possessiveness and jealousy on her part. In 2002, he dated a Swedish model named Izabelle Filling. He was then linked with celebrity hotel heiress and Hollywood starlet Paris Hilton, and by late 2003, the two were publicly dating. The relationship ended in July 2004 and he was stuck with a Paris tattoo that he got during their relationship; he later covered it with a skull and crossbones design that says "Old habits die hard." In 2005, it was rumored that he got engaged to a Chinese entertainer Bai Ling, but he denied the rumor. In early 2006, Carter dated Australian model Claire Grieve, after meeting her at a Backstreet Boys concert at the Rod Laver Arena. Carter's parents were divorced in 2003 and his father remarried Ginger Elrod on April 1, 2004. In June 7, 2005, Carter welcomed the birth of his half-brother, Kanden Brent Carter, from his father's new marriage; he also has a younger step-sister named Taelyn by his father's new wife. His mother remarried to a Mr. Holcomb on November 2, 2005. He is part Native American.

Carter was announced as the new United Nations Special Ambassador for the Year of the Dolphin (YoD) on May 17, 2007 representing the United Nations Environment Programme, the Convention on Migratory Species, and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. He was to record a new song and video with all proceeds going to this project, make a public service announcement and appear at local schools. Carter has stated that he has a passion for the environment and its oceans. He has worked with the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) and the Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN). He also has lobbied for these causes at Capitol Hill.

Carter has acknowledged ongoing struggles with drugs and alcohol abuse. He says that he became sober after being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and realized that he could die if he did not make major lifestyle changes. The singer credits fellow Backstreet Boys member Kevin Richardson for helping him turn his life around by giving him Norman Vincent Peale's book Why Some Positive Thinkers Get Powerful Results. After reading that book he started a healthier lifestyle, saying "Working out definitely helped my self esteem, and it helped to kind of push it all aside. I just started replacing drinking and the parties... with healthier things like sports, video games."

On February 19, 2009, Carter appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to speak about his past on drugs and alcohol addictions.

Later in 2013, it was announced that Carter and his fiancee, Lauren Kitt, would be starring in their own reality showGetting Carter to I Do. The show will be centered around the planning of their upcoming wedding. It will also show Carter and Kitt addressing issues with their personal lives, which includes their past, their families, and their thoughts on the upcoming marriage. It will air on VH1 sometime in 2014.

In 2013, he published his first book titled Facing the Music & Living to talk about it.
